During World War II, Great Britain had its Bomber Command, under the command of Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Travers “Bomber” Harris. Under Harris’s command, Bomber Command laid waste to the German cities of Hamburg and Dresden. Starting during WW-II, and after, the U.S. counterpart to “Bomber Harris” was General Curtis LeMay, the designer of the tactic involving the mass use of incendiary bombs dropped by B-29s flying at low altitude on Japanese cities. This tactic was responsible for killing approximately 100,000 Japanese citizens during one raid on one district of Tokyo.

Now comes Major Robert “Magyar” Brovdi, Commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces. Unlike Harris and LeMay. Major Brovdi has no bombers at his disposal, and Ukraine only hits military targets. Instead, Major Brovdi relies on long-range drones and, increasingly, Ukrainian-designed and constructed cruise missiles, to lay waste to Russia’s oil export facilities, major refineries, and pumping stations, along with key industries including micro-electronics and production of fertilizer that are critical to Russia’s war machine and food production, respectively.

Over the last several days, Ukraine, using drones and possibly a new cruise missile called the “Flamingo,” knocked out approximately 40% of Russia’s oil export capacity in one night, effectively kicking down one of the supports holding up Russia’s economy and their ability to finance their Special Military Operation in Ukraine, along with its ability to prosecute the war. These attacks represent the latest in a systematic effort by Ukraine to cripple Russia’s ability to export oil, especially after the decision by the United States to lift sanctions on Russian oil exports, ostensibly for 30 days, but only on Russian oil that is already at sea.
